Sophie Guzik

Sophie Guzik, 74, of Garfield, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2022 of ALS. Sophie was born on August 10, 1947 in Stary Nart, Poland raised on the family farm by her grandparents, Zofia and Michal Sudol. She immigrated to the United States on June 15,1966 and married Stanley Guzik in the summer of 1968. They were married for 53 years until her beloved Stanley's passing in 2021. Her life was well lived and centered around her family. She was a deeply loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Family was always her first priority. She focused on her sons doing well in school by spending countless hours reading to the young boys as they learned their new language, English, together. Her Polish/American dictionary and list of new vocabulary was never too far out of sight. Sophie worked at Mondelez International for over 20 years until retiring in March, 2020. If she wasn't working, she was always busy taking care of her family, making the best pierogi, assisting her husband on countless home improvement projects or babysitting for her grandchildren. During a first birthday party, one of the guests asked, "Does she walk yet?...We couldn't tell because Babcia carried her the whole time." Sophie was the first best friend of all her grandchildren. Always a constant source of encouragement, she would say a phrase in Polish, "szanuj robota" which loosely translates to "value work." We all knew what she meant because she would show us everyday by her actions. She wanted us to take pride and care to do our best in all aspects of our lives. She was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Kostka R.C. Church in Garfield for over 50 years. She was deeply religious and regularly attended church every Sunday. Sophie was the beloved wife of the late Stanley Guzik, devoted mother of Joseph Guzik and his wife, Aleta, Stanley Guzik and his wife, Melissa, loving grandmother of Stella, Julia, Benjamin, Sophia and Thomas and dear sister of Stanley Serafin, Kathy Lapczinski, Henry Serafin, Joseph Serafin, and the late Donna Serafin. While she will no longer be with us physically, her strong presence and example will live in our hearts forever. Idz z Bogiem, Kochana Mamusia.
